Spirit Shadow Spectre Bones and Phantom

16mm film / HD
colour, b+w, sound,  21 minutes 40 seconds, 2013

Spirit Shadow Spectre Bones and Phantom takes as its starting point a polynesian Ti plant and a visit to a medium to re-encounter the German Expressionist film director, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's infamous tabus (Tabu the film and tabu the curse said to have been placed upon Murnau Himself while filming Tabu). The film, which borrows its title from several generations of the “Spirit Datacine” film to digital transfer machine, acts as a horizontal plane of unverifiable associations to bring into proximity the economies of sacrifice and representation. An attempt to become mediumistic is adopted in the work as a methodology for channelling multiple points of theoretical, anecdotal and visual reference to sense and acknowledge weird equivalences and the unsettling of delineations.
